With the 10-year mortgage rate being at
an all-time historical low, now may be the time to get yourself some free, no
obligation insurance against future interest rate increases.... at least for
  the next 120 days anyway.

Did you know that we are able to secure a 10-year fixed term at
3.99% for 120 days with some simple information just in case the rates take a
  funny turn and move up?

Here's all we need to secure this historical low interest rate:
- your name
- your email address
- your telephone number
- the approximate mortgage amount

Simply email this information to info@gibbardhoffart.com
and we will email you back a rate-hold certificate. Once you're ready to move
forward, contact us and we'll get the ball rolling to turn this rate hold
into a real approval for you and obtain a secure interest rate for your
mortgage - for the next 10 years!

Please note this is a simple "rate hold" only a not a
"pre-approval". Mortgage must complete before the 120 day
time-frame so we will need to start the process well before this expiry date.
Please contact our office and we'll be more than happy to walk you through
  the process.

This is a "just in case" maneuver and is a free service from
Gibbard Hoffart Financial Group. Please email us or give us a call to secure
  your future today.

Feng Shui, the art of orienting objects for optimal qi, has
gained in popularity in recent years, particularly in BC. BC Living
shows how it can add a little zen in your home. At its most basic level,
classical feng shui can be broken down into four factors that,
together, determine how desirable a location is for the client's needs.

1.
Location: Look at the physical area itself. 70% of a building's energy
is determined by its location within a five mile radius. Traditionally
positive traits include elevation and proximity to water. Elements that
are typically avoided are bridges and fast-moving traffic. One Asian
investor was said to have bought property based solely from observations
taken from a helicopter survey of the land

2. Building: How is
the building set within its location? Some properties just don’t sell
because of the direction they face. Traditionally, a south-facing home
is desirable because the sun is thought to warm the house and foster
strength and health for its inhabitants.

3. Occupants: In order
to do an accurate consultation, Chinese zodiac charts can be used to map
out the "energy blueprint" of the occupants to choose the best location
for clients’ needs.

4. Time: When was the building constructed?
Houses run in 20-year cycles. Buildings that were made in 2004 will
flourish and increase in value in 2024. Of course, there are smaller
changes to a house's energy every year, but every 20 those seriously
practicing more advanced feng shui will make adjustments such as
painting their house or changing their front door.

Now want to
incorporate Feng Shui into your home? Regardless of where your home is
and which way it faces, you can incorporate to improve your feng shui.
Here are some tips:

Declutter! This is especially important for the front door area, the bedroom and the stove area.

Front door. It should be attractive, bright and welcoming. It should also be free of clutter so as not to impede the qi.

Space.
Qi needs space to flow freely. “If the qi is disturbed, then people are
disturbed. If the qi is squeezed into a dark or confined space, then
that changes the quality of the qi.

Light. This is important,
which is another reason why south-facing properties are so desirable.
Ensure your space has adequate lighting that reaches all the corners.

Balance.
This is based on the yin-yang principle. Everything needs to be in
balance in order to achieve harmony. Yes, you want light but not so much
that it’s glaring. Warmth from the sun is great, but you don’t want to
overheat. Create a space that is well balanced.

Calgary, Alberta – Rocky Mountain Show Jumping is
pleased at this time to welcome back Jenn McGinn of Greenhawk Calgary to their
valued family of sponsors. Jenn and her family have been long time supporters
of Rocky Mountain Show Jumping, and their wonderful GreenHawk franchise is
celebrating their 7th anniversary in 2012.

Jenn was announced as the 2011 People's Choice award winner in the Jr/Am
category. It is obvious to everyone who competes at the tournaments here at
RMSJ why Jenn was chosen by her peers. She always has a smile on her face!
Jenn is proud of the fact that she loves her business and enjoys competing in
the hunter divisions, with no real aspirations to move into the Jumper ring.
Greenhawk will be a title sponsor of one of the $10,000.00 Hunter Derbies
that will be held during one of the 8 outdoor tournaments to be held in 2012
at Anderson Ranch. As the season approaches, their Derby will be announced.

"Rocky Mountain Show Jumping is an incredible organization with a
global vision. From the grassroots to the International level of the sport,
it is a competitor oriented venue that strives to create a positive and
valuable experience for both horse and rider alike. We at Greenhawk Calgary
are proud to support an organization such as RMSJ that aligns itself with our
values of community, horsemanship, and passion for the sport." explains
Jenn, owner of Greenhawk, Calgary. "My love is obviously the hunter
ring, and it is great to see all of the fantastic Hunter Derbies every year
hosted at Anderson Ranch, and we will be pleased to attach our name to one of
  them."

“We at Rocky Mountain Show Jumping are always thankful for the support
given to us by companies in the community. Their support helps us to further
develop the venue into a place where equine enthusiasts from all walks of
life can come to enjoy great competition while fine tuning their
skills," explains John. "The support becomes even more special to
us when it comes from people who are inside our industry, as it shows us that
they care about what we are doing. Jenn is one of those people, and we are
pleased to have her continued support."

January 2012 1
January, Volume 8, Issue 1
Letter from the Chair
The winter show circuits have begun across the continent.
From Wellington to Thermal, and in some arenas to the
north, people are showing horses and preparing for the
upcoming year. An Olympic year is always an interesting
one. A flurry of horse sales happen in the weeks prior to the
year end. Under FEI rules, the horse must be registered
to the country it will represent by December 31st of the
preceding year. Large dollar horse sales are impossible to
keep secret and fans everywhere were glued to websites to
see which country lost their superstars and which country
gained them! Several potential Olympic stars came our way
for Eric Lamaze and others, boding well for our Canadian
team hopes. If the stars align, we may be able to repeat our Beijing success story.
This will be the final Olympics with chef d’equipe Terrance ‘Torchy’ Millar at the helm. He
retires from the position after this year and hands the reins to Mark Laskin. Mark has
acted as Co-Chair of High Performance with Torchy for the past two years and we have
every faith that he is ready to take over. It is a reassuring feeling for the Jump Canada
Board not to be scrambling for a replacement. The orientation and shared position plan
will help ensure a smooth transition.
We have also bid farewell to Akaash Maharaj, the CEO of Equine Canada (EC). Akaash
held the position for four years and was certainly the most influential and well-spoken
leader we have seen at EC. While every leader has their detractors, most would agree
that it will be a difficult task to replace Akaash. He raised our Canadian profile within
the FEI and the international sports world, and never failed to impress and surprise us
with his oratory and written skills. Akaash led EC through a tumultuous time with the
Provinces and challenged all the disciplines to be the very best that they could be. We
will miss him, and we at Jump Canada wish him well on whatever road he chooses to
take.
The annual Equine Canada Convention takes place in St. John’s, Newfoundland, during
the first week of February. Many volunteer hours will be spent at meetings and clinics. If
you can join us please do. If not, stay tuned for updates from all the meetings.
John Taylor
Chair, Jump Canada
In this Issue:
Young Guns! Some people wait a long
time for that moment while others never know it at all despite long, successful
show careers. Emily George is one of the fortunate; at just 26 years old and
the youngest member of the Canadian Show Jumping Team in the Nations’
Cup in Buenos Aires last November, she experienced what she hopes was
only her first taste of being on a winning team.
“This was my first team experience, and it was such a cool feeling,” she says.
“It’s actually a bit hard to put into words, but the atmosphere of competing on a
team is something you just can’t beat.”
Emily can be proud of the fact that she contributed to the team’s result, jumping
clear in the first round riding Quidam’s Ramiro, a 15-year-old Holsteiner gelding
owned by her parents, Julie and Rick George. In the second round, the
combined results of team members Emily, Tiffany Foster and Angela Covert-
Lawrence, meant anchor rider Jonathan Asselin wasn’t required to jump at all
as Canada took the victory over its closest rivals, Brazil and Argentina.
For Emily, who has known this was what she wanted to strive for almost
from her first riding lesson, the success in Argentina was an important career
milestone. Emily was first introduced to riding by way of a lesson given to her
as an eighth birthday present in Toronto, where her family lived before moving
west to Calgary. A self-confessed ‘type A’ personality, Emily has always thrown
herself completely into her passions. The only significant amount of time she
has ever spent out of the saddle was in her last year of university, when she
took half a year off from riding to complete a geology degree. But Emily knew
that was just a temporary situation; the degree is more of a back-up strategy
than a career goal. Riding and teaching are what Emily has in her plans for
the future.
“As I was graduating I knew I had no interest in working in that field,” she says.
“I love the horses and I believe I have much to give back to the community by
teaching.”
With her first Grand Prix horse, Smart Thinking, Emily led the Western Division
of the Kubota Cup Canadian Championship Series through two of the three
Western Canadian series competitions despite being only 21 years of age.
When she bought Quidam’s Ramiro, who had been the 2006 Canadian Show
Jumping Champion under Laurie Bucci, Emily was also riding the mare Ramila
at the grand prix level.
“She was an unorthodox jumper and very hot,” says Emily of the mare, who
is now beginning a new career as a brood mare. By comparison, Quidam’s
Ramiro has “always been very solid. He’s such a good teacher.”
After winning the Canadian Show Jumping Championships at the age of nine,
Eric Lamaze showed Quidam’s Ramiro before he arrived at Jonathan Asselin’s
stable for six months in 2007. Emily was training with Asselin at the time, and
was looking for a second Grand Prix horse. Asselin suggested she try him and
the pairing was a success.
“Our first class was a 1.45m class,” she remembers. “I jumped around in a
snaffle, and he was great. That first summer we did both 1.60m derbies held
at Spruce Meadows.”
Emily George and Quidam’s Ramiro
Cealy Tetley
Emily George, left, was part of Canada’s winning
team with Tiffany Foster, chef d’equipe Mark Laskin,
Angela Covert-Lawrence and Jonathan Asselin in the
Buenos Aires Nations’ Cup in November.
Hipismodigital.com.ar
January 2012 3
When Emily bought Quidam’s Ramiro, she knew he would be an important
stepping stone in her team aspirations, but she didn’t realize he would actually
become her first team horse.
“I didn’t know if he would last and I didn’t think he would become as careful as he
has,” she says.
Quidam’s Ramiro proved himself with consistent clear rounds in 2011, culminating
with his team performance in Argentina. His clear first round in the Nations’ Cup
was one of only two in that first round. Now that the 2012 season in Florida,
where Emily has been wintering for the past several years, is under way, she will
choose her competitions carefully in order to give herself the best possible chance
at making the team for London. She is, however, realistic about her chances,
saying, “I’m young and I don’t have a lot of experience, but my horse has all the
scope in the world.”
Breaking that big goal into smaller pieces, Emily is focused on making the
Nations’ Cup team in week eight of the Winter Equestrian Festival circuit. She
has also been actively looking for another Grand Prix horse or a talented young
horse, traveling to Europe nearly monthly throughout the fall. While she didn’t find
another potential Olympic horse before the December 31 deadline, she did come
home from one trip with a seven-year-old mare named Zavira. Having gone to
England to look at a Grand Prix horse, she instead she fell in love with the mare,
who had been bred just outside London.
“She’s big, tall, beautiful and black, but she’s green,” Emily says. “She was in the field until she was five.”
Emily will start out the Florida season slowly with Zavira so that the pair can form a strong partnership. Emily is based for
the winter with Quidam’s Ramiro and Zavira at Marley Goodman’s Turtle Lane Farm, which conveniently backs on to the
WEF show grounds. Her home training base is at Brenda Riddell’s Silver Star Farms in Calgary, but she hopes to start her
own business next year, which will mean skipping the annual trip to Florida.
“The clientele you start out with are not likely to be the kind you bring to Florida,” she explains. “I will take a break from
Florida next year to start teaching.”
Emily went out on her own as a rider a couple of years ago, but realizing that an eye on the ground is essential, she has
been getting help over the past year from American Grand Prix rider and trainer Eric Hasbrouck. He traveled with her to
Argentina, and is usually on hand at the bigger shows to offer his guidance. One party Emily doesn’t like to have at the
shows is her family.
“I’m at the point where I ask that my parents and my husband not come and watch me compete,” she explains. “I like to
focus on the task at hand. They visit on my days off, but I like to keep business separate from family.”
Although Emily’s engineer husband Liam Dinning is not involved with horses at all, she says, “He’s incredibly supportive.
We gave the girl who works for me Christmas off, so he and I mucked stalls.”
Whatever happens during this Olympic year for Emily, she has the same clear sense of purpose that has brought her to
where she is now. And given the determination and commitment that landed her on the Nations’ Cup team last fall, Emily is
not likely to disappear from the international show ring any time soon.
Spruce Meadows Media Services
2011/2012 North American World Cup League As of December 21, 2011
Eastern Division
Ian Millar 34
Eric Lamaze 21
Beth Underhill 19
Yann Candele 19
Hugh Graham 18
Western Division
Brian Morton 36
John Pearce 33
Chris Pratt 25
Samantha Buirs 24
Jenna Thompson 22
January 2012 4
Hall of Fame Inductee Profile
The Anderson Family
The sixth annual Jump Canada Hall of Fame Gala, presented by BMO Financial Group, was held on Sunday, November
6, 2011, at the Liberty Grand in Toronto, ON. Each year, the Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding contributions to the
sport. In 2011, five inductees were welcomed into the Jump Canada Hall of Fame. In tribute to the new inductees, we
will profile one each month in The Warm-Up Ring.
Builder (Organization): The Anderson Family
The Anderson Family of Calgary, Alberta has contributed to show jumping in Canada over two generations and on several
levels. All four children of JC and Barbara Anderson – John, Bryan, Sandra and Susan – have been members of the
Canadian team; in fact, Sandra is doubly inducted to the Hall of Fame this year as a member of the 1991 Pan American
Games team. In support of their family’s shared passion for horses, the Andersons built Aspen Ridge, a private show
jumping facility in the equestrian-dense countryside southwest of Calgary. The scope of Aspen Ridge expanded to the
point that, in 1986, the Andersons hosted their first international competition, which was also a selection trial for that
year’s World Championships. When JC Anderson sold his oil and gas company Anderson Exploration and retired in
2001, Aspen Ridge became Anderson Farms.
Over many years, Barbara Anderson was a dedicated volunteer at the Royal Winter Fair. She had made connections
with some of Europe’s top riders after Sandra and Susan spent some time training and competing in Europe early in their
careers. One of her contributions was to help the Royal secure top international riders from Europe. Perhaps Barbara
Anderson’s greatest gift to the sport in Canada was the creation of the CET Medal program, which continues to be an
important stepping stone for talented young riders destined for international careers.
“The CET Medal is an important legacy from my mother,” says John Anderson. “I hope it continues into the next generation
of future stars in the sport.”
John Anderson does more than hope for the future of the CET Medals; he hosts qualifiers and Regional Finals at his
Rocky Mountain Show Jumping competitions, formed in 1997. Today, the facility is home to a number of tournaments,
including four CSI2* competitions.
From left to right: Bryan, Susan, Sandra, John, JC and Barbara
Michelle C. The following day, the pair incurred four
faults in the first round to finish in 16th place. In the
second round, Keary and Hot Pot once again had four
faults for 15th position.
Riding for Team Chopardissimo with Lily Tootill from
New Zealand, Taryn Rault from Russia and Simon
Fernandez-Salvador Fallet from Ecuador, Keary’s
two-round total was combined with those of the other
members of her team. With only the top three scores
of each round to count, Keary’s team had a two-round
total of four faults with a combined time of 232.25 to
win the bronze medal. Team Happy Diamonds won
gold with four faults in a time of 212.52.
Each year has been so robust with problems and successes and
learning experiences and human experiences that a year is a lifetime at
Apple. So this has been ten lifetimes.

Steve Jobs

I
think Steve Jobs summed up more than just his life at Apple with this
quote. I think for many of us living in Whistler, this could be Jobs
talking about our lives. We have seen many ups and downs in this little
town. We have been known to think different…and differently.
Sometimes being on the edge of cool means that we are the hottest thing
in snow, sometimes it means that we have an incredibly expensive library
with no books in. Steve Jobs co-founded Apple, was ousted, and came
back to make Apple one of the best known brands in history. Jobs was a
visionary, and I think, we can take a few more of his words to heart as
we look into our future. We need to return to what we are good at. We
need to “Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an
environment where excellence is expected.” This is a town that has
excellence bred into its bones. We were created for the Olympics. We
have created Olympians. All around us there is

And
it comes from saying no to 1,000 things to make sure we don't get on
the wrong track or try to do too much. We're always thinking about new
markets we could enter, but it's only by saying no that you can
concentrate on the things that are really important.

Steve Jobs

And no, we don't know where it will lead. We just know there's something much bigger than any of us here.

Still in effect is the Federal Government First Time Home
Buyer's Tax credit. This is a non-refundable tax credit for first-time
buyers who acquire a qualifying home after January 27, 2009.

Beginning in 2009, a new line was incorporated in the personal
income tax return form to allow the buyer to claim the Credit. The Credit
is calculated by multiplying the lowest personal income tax rate for the
year by $5,000 and is claimable for the taxation year in which the home is
acquired. The maximum amount of the Credit in 2012 will be $750

A qualifying home is
a housing unit located in Canada. This includes existing homes and those
being constructed. Single-family homes, semi-detached homes, townhouses,
mobile homes, condominium units and apartments in duplexes, triplexes,
fourplexes or apartment buildings all qualify.
