Summer and all its joys are slowly coming to an end. Shows
are wrapping up until the fall circuits begin, and I keep
hearing mutterings about getting the blankets ready for the
horses. I just had the privilege of attending Canada’s only
CSIO tournament, the Spruce Meadows “Masters,” where
our Canadian Team thrilled us with a second place finish
– by less than a rail. The next day, our hero, Eric Lamaze,
riding Hickstead, provided the most exciting afternoon of
show jumping with a win in the $1 million CN International,
proving yet again that the combination is the finest in the
world and arguably the greatest of all time. Thanks, Eric.
The West has a fabulous opportunity this November. The Jump Canada Symposium
takes place in Vancouver on November 19 and 20. Organized by the Athlete and
Domestic Development Committee of Jump Canada (Lindy Welsby and Barbara
Mitchell), the Symposium is being coordinated by Claudia Cojocar, who has proven
herself to be a master at organizing clinics. To read the agenda would make any horse
fanatic want to attend. Here is a rundown of the two days:
Day One: Young Horse Development – backing, ground work, free jumping – live
demos and discussions. During lunch there will be “stations” set up where you will see
grooming stall set ups, clipping, braiding, bandaging, tack fitting and dental care – and
lunch! The afternoon session is on the hunter, from gate to gate – on the line, under
saddle and over fences. The afternoon ends with a panel discussion on the day’s
topics and then a stallion showcase of local studs.
Day Two: Veterinary panel discussing many topics including pre-purchase exams and
the “Monday morning jog.” Next is flatwork and gymnastics for riders from novice to
advanced. Stations at lunch include long lining, shoeing, shipping and footing. The
afternoon includes live demos of jumper riders, derby hunters and equitation riders.
This feast for equestrians is being presented by Julie Winkel and Linda Allen, both
famous for their lively presentations. The location is Thunderbird Show Park, by very
kind permission of the Tidball family and capably organized by Chris Pack. Registration
can be done through Jump Canada. It is an opportunity not to be missed!

Manitoba may not be considered the mecca of show jumping, but that hasn’t
stopped Hayley Alfonso. The St. Andrews, MB, resident has more than put her
mark on the sport.
The 24-year-old has won the Jump Canada Talent Squad Series Western
Championships twice, once in 2006 aboard Le Noir and again in 2010 riding
Lennox 157. Aboard Laforza, she also represented Canada at the 2007 North
American Young Riders’ Championships in Lexington, Virginia, earning a Team
Silver medal.
This season, Hayley has already enjoyed numerous top ten finishes, including
wins in the $25,000 High Junior/Amateur-Owner Classic at the HITS Thermal
winter circuit in California; the $18,000 RBC Cup at the Royal Manitoba Winter
Fair in Brandon; and the $31,000 Eunice Krausert Memorial Grand Prix at the
Rocky Mountain Classic II in Calgary, AB. All of those wins came aboard Lennox
157, an 11-year-old grey Holsteiner gelding owned by her family’s Tyndall Wood
Farms.
A Manitoba girl at heart, Hayley has spent most of her riding career, which began
at the tender age of two, based in her home province.
“The weather isn’t nearly as bad here as everyone seems to think it is,” jokes
Hayley. “The summers are really hot and while the winters are cold, it adds a nice
contrast. It’s also centrally located, so it’s easy to get almost anywhere from here,
including to most of the big shows.”
Hayley spent two years training in Calgary, AB, to gain more experience, but
moved back in 2010 saying, “For me, Manitoba is home. I don’t really see myself
leaving any time in the near future. Maybe one day I’ll find someplace I like better,
but that hasn’t happened yet.”
Despite the fact there are only two gold-rated shows held in the province each
year, Hayley says it’s still a great place for up-and-coming riders to cut their teeth.
“I think that there is a lot of opportunity here,” she explains. “Some very good
riders have come out of Manitoba. Even though there aren’t a lot of high level
competitions here, the ones we do have are great for the more ambitious young
riders. Manitoba is a fantastic starting point for anyone who wants to reach the
top level of this sport.”
The top level is certainly what Hayley is reaching for, hoping to represent Canada
on a Nations’ Cup team within the next five years and, ultimately, at the Olympics
one day.
“I’ve always known that riding was what I wanted to do,” says Hayley. “I love it,
and really want to see how far I can go. Representing Canada at that level of
competition would be absolutely amazing and I am definitely prepared to put in
the work.”
Even with her far reaching goals, Hayley plans to remain an amateur competitor.
“I’m happy riding my own horses, working with them and growing with them,” she explains. “I also get to make my own
schedule which is nice.”
Her schedule for the 2012 show season will be a demanding one and Hayley freely admits she doesn’t have much free time.

“I don’t get to do the other things I enjoy, like skiing,
snorkelling and diving, very often. That seems to be the way
it is for most people who are involved with horses; they really
do kind of take over your whole life.”
Instead of hitting the slopes, Hayley plans to spend the
winter in the show ring, either in California or Florida, before
returning to Canada to contest the summer tournanaments
at Spruce Meadows. She also plans to head out east.
“I haven’t really shown in Ontario at all apart from the Royal
Winter Fair,” she says. “I think it would be a great experience
for me and my horses to spend some more time showing in
Ontario. There are a lot of great competitions out there. I
really like competing in new places and against new riders.
It’s a great way for me to challenge myself.”
She will continue riding Lennox 157 in the grand prix ring
next season while also introducing another one of her horses, a nine-year-old Hannoverian gelding named Mikado, to the
upper levels of competition.
“I had really been hoping to ride Mikado in a few grand prix this year, but he has had some problems with his feet that have
kept him out of competition,” says Hayley. “I would love for him to be able to start off at the grand prix level next year.”
As she continues to find her way into the winner’s circle, both in Manitoba and further afield, one thing is certain - she has
truly done her province proud and helped put Manitoba on the map.
10 Questions With …Sarah Johnstone
At just 20 years of age, Sarah Johnstone is the youngest member of the Canadian Show
Jumping Team short list, but the Aurora, ON, native is more than holding her own against
veterans in the sport. Johnstone recently earned her first International Equestrian Federation
(FEI) sanctioned win by riding Starlet to victory in the $32,000 CSI3* Open Welcome in Bromont,
QC in July. Two weeks later, Johnstone won the $10,000 Modified Grand Prix on August 13 at
the National Open in Ottawa on Leonidas for the second consecutive year. The following day,
she emerged victorious in the $25,000 Hayes Co. Grand Prix, also aboard Leonidas, a14-yearold
Hannoverian gelding owned by Trish Crang.
Johnstone has trained with two-time Canadian Olympian Jay Hayes at North Ridge in
Orangeville, ON, since she was 12 years old. She is now heading to Europe to further her
show jumping career, and will be based with Paul Hendrix in The Netherlands.

4Eric Lamaze “Masters” Spruce Meadows
Olympic Champions Eric Lamaze of Schomberg, ON, and Hickstead won the $1
million CN International for the second time in their career on Sunday, September
11, at the Spruce Meadows “Masters” Tournament in Calgary, AB.
An international field of 35 horses tackled the tough two-round track set by
Olympic mastermind Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela. None could match the
perfection displayed by Lamaze and Hickstead as they posted two clear rounds,
despite losing a shoe on course during the second round. As the pair sailed over
the final fence to clinch victory, the record crowd of 89,632 show jumping fans
erupted in cheers as Lamaze threw his helmet into the air and galloped around
the International Ring to a standing ovation.
“What a horse!” exclaimed Lamaze, who also won the event in 2007. “It is just as
exciting as it was the first time, if not more. The money is great, but to have his
name attached to the title twice means a lot. As he nears the end of his career, I
am so happy for my horse.”
In addition to claiming the first place prize money of $325,000 in the CN
International, Lamaze was also awarded a $50,000 bonus for winning his second
CN-sponsored event of the 2011 season. That brought Lamaze’s all-time career
earnings at Spruce Meadows to more than $3.5 million.
“This is the Grand Prix that you dream about winning,” said Lamaze, who is
currently ranked the number one show jumping rider in the world. “I dreamed
about it when I was a kid, and I think a lot of riders dream about winning it.”
Lamaze has been riding Hickstead, a 15-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion
owned by Ashland Stables and Lamaze’s Torrey Pines Stable since the horse
was seven.
“I know him very well, and he wants to jump clear just as much as I do,” said
Lamaze of his mount. “I don’t come to Canada very often - I only come here to
Spruce Meadows in the summer and then back for the “Masters,” so to win here
is very special. He is the best horse in the world, in my opinion, and for him to
show it here to his Canadian fans is great.”
Lamaze was also handed the keys to a new Mercedes-Benz SLK 350 as the
leading Canadian rider after claiming victory four out of the five days comprising
the 2011 Spruce Meadows “Masters” Tournament. On Wednesday, he and
Hickstead, a 15-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion owned by Ashland Stables
and Torrey Pines Stable, won the $35,000 Finning Welcome. Riding Coriana van
Klapscheut, a nine-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare owned by Artisan Farms
and Torrey Pines Stable, Lamaze won Thursday’s $40,000 ATCO Structures &
Logistics Cup and Saturday’s $80,000 Suncor Energy Winning Round. Also
on Saturday, Lamaze and Hickstead jumped double clear to lead Canada to a
second place finish in the $350,000 BMO Nations’ Cup.

CAVALOR ‘Athlete of the Month’
Sarah Johnstone was named the CAVALOR ‘Athlete of the Month’ for August by Jump Canada.
Following a string of victories, Sarah Johnstone has been named the CAVALOR ‘Athlete of the
Month’ for August by Jump Canada.
Johnstone 20, of Aurora, ON, and Leonidas captured the $25,000 Hayes Co. Grand Prix on
Sunday, August 14, during the first week of competition at the National Capital Show Jumping
Tournaments held at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON. Johnstone rode
Leonidas, a 14-year-old Hannoverian gelding owned by Trish Crang, to the win.
The pair’s success had begun the previous day, when they won the $10,000 Peel Maryborough
Mutual Insurance Company/Henry Equestrian Insurance Brokers Ltd. Modified Grand Prix. As
the defending champions of the Modified Grand Prix, Johnstone and Leonidas topped 19 starters for the victory by posting the
fastest double clean effort of the class.
In addition to her wins in August, Johnstone rode Starlet, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare owned by North Ridge, to
victory in the 1.50m Open Jumper at CSI** International Bromont II on July 29.
“I’ve been training hard all summer and everything came together in Ottawa,” said Johnstone. “The two horse shows are
beautiful and feature a great grand prix ring.
“It is awesome that Cavalor sponsors this award,” added Johnstone, who is heading to Europe to further her jumping career by
training with Paul Hendrix. “Every sponsor counts, and Cavalor makes a huge difference.”
As the CAVALOR ‘Athlete of the Month’ for August, Johnstone receives a gift certificate from title sponsor CAVALOR Inc.
