2010 GAMES NEWS
BBC visit to Whistler The BBC (London News) recently visited Whistler on a quest to see everything Games related: from the Athletes Village to Whistler Medals Plaza to the top of Blackcomb Mountain. Following the site visit they produced four Olympic-related stories focussed on security, hosting the Games during a recession, welcoming the world and what the Games mean to locals. What’s more, Mayor Ken Melamed was the first mayor they’ve ever interviewed who skied away when the interview was over. More>>

Municipality builds Whistler’s water capacity Most of us struggle to drink the required eight glasses of water a day, but never really stop to think about where our drinking water supply comes from. Access to clean, healthy drinking water is a basic health requirement for people living in or visiting Whistler, and our water is tested on a weekly basis and continues to meet the highest standards as set out in the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines. As the resort community grows, so must our drinking water supply. This summer, the RMOW will complete several upgrades to its current water system as part of a comprehensive strategy to increase the safety and capacity of the municipal water system. More>>
Public Places in Whistler Become Smoke-Free Whistlerites and visitors will be able to enjoy clean air this patio season, thanks to a new bylaw prohibiting smoking near businesses. The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has adopted a smoking regulation bylaw and associated fines that will prohibit businesses from allowing smoking within six metres from a doorway, window or air intake. Welcome to the Whistler Centre for Sustainability The Whistler Centre for Sustainability is up and running. The Centre is a new enterprising non-profit organization created from a vision of the community and supported in its start-up by the RMOW. Our mission is to ‘lead communities and tourism toward a sustainable future’. The Centre aims to support and accelerate Whistler’s journey toward sustainability by continuing to manage and coordinate the Whistler2020 process, and by providing assistance and resources to local businesses and organizations to incorporate sustainability practices in their operations. Inspired by our very own Whistler2020 community sustainability planning process, the Centre will also export the best practices generated in Whistler to other communities in BC, Canada, and eventually globally, through fee-for-service offerings to local governments and the tourism sector, as well as through grant-funded initiatives.
